Reimagining the infrastructural hubs of Belgrade in the age of automation
This project explores the intersection of infrastructure development, technological progress and environmental sustainability in the context of Serbia. Examining the concepts of Industry 5.0, the new nature and the machinery landscape, the study explores the challenges and opportunities for the transformation of the infrastructure network. With an interdisciplinary approach, the research deals with the current state of infrastructure in Serbia and identifies the need for upgrading at multiple levels. The findings of this study underscore the importance of automation, intermodal transport and the integration of different modes of transport in improving connectivity, efficiency and sustainability. The thesis emphasizes the vital role of establishing the connection between people, machines and nature as a central principle. This comprehensive perspective encourages synergy and ensures a harmonious and balanced approach to infrastructure development. Based on these insights, the study concludes with a recommendation for the implementation of an experimental architectural project—a contemporary intermodal terminal on the left bank of the Danube—that uses the concepts explored in the thesis. In conclusion, this research highlights the importance of strategic investments, collaboration and innovative thinking in shaping a future-proof infrastructure network with the aim of strengthening the interconnectedness of people, machines and nature in the context of Industry 5.0.
