CLASSIC AND DIGITAL TECTONICS
REINTERPRETATION TECTONICS OF SPACE ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE GENERAL STAFF BUILDING
The theme of the project is based on the subject of the General Staff building and the way in which its revitalization is possible through digital tectonics. The broader goal of the research is to restore the design and use value of the building in the modern context, as well as to re-establish the spirit of the place considering the current situation caused by the NATO bombing. The narrower goal of the work relies on the research of the potential implementation of the principles of digital tectonics on the General Staff building, without violating the original design idea. The question arises as to what spatial and programmatic concept the General Staff deserves, as a cultural monument and a stronghold of the traumatic past. The hypothesis of the work is that by reinterpreting the elements of tectonics, the initial design principles adapted to contemporary architecture are revived, forming a “new” and healthy space. The starting point of this hypothesis is based on the fact that the General Staff building was formed on the foundations of the principles of classical tectonics, and in this connection the introduction of digital tectonics as an optimal revitalization solution is justified. The research was conducted through historical and theoretical analysis, but also through a survey of Serbian citizens as a relevant method for forming a strategy for the reconstruction of an object of public importance. The results of this study aim to indicate the importance of the development of tectonic practice as a theoretical understanding of architectural design in the contemporary context, as well as to indicate the development of awareness of the bombed architectural heritage.
